Wow-weee!! It's been a busy month & summer is fast approaching! Fieldwork(in the ocean) has officially begun in the Pemsɨk area (though on land it runs year-round). We started things off with a Nukumi's Teachings event at the Port Joli Community Hall. Thanks to all who attended! We were packed! Community members/Attendees were introduced to the Pemsɨk Mawa'tasikl Anko'tmu'kl work, the blending of Mi'kmaq ways of knowing & traditional knowledge of the area that guides the work, especially the freedive surveys. We also introduced some of the notable creatures&plant-kin we share the space with. Following the event we carried out some amazing night surveys along the coast. This is important to understanding our relationship with nature & whole ecosystems, but also understanding T.E.K.(traditional ecological knowledge) that our Mi'kmaq Ancestors gifted us. We then attended the L'sɨtkuk/Wayback Lodge fishing event to share Pemsɨk knowledge with community members, especially youth! In the coming weeks we look forward to Ocean Week events (Halifax), the Whales are in Our Nature event (Ottawa) our annual BioBlitz (Pemsɨk), and other Nukumi's Teachings event in the coming weeks! We are the 7th generation our Ancestors prepared for. We are their prayers, their visions, their hope for the future. We are the songs and the dances and the ceremonies and language they held sacred. To them, we were the coming gift. A sacred generation.... Its time to act like it!! We have rights, yes.... but we have responsibilities. We have relatives not only in humans, but in all creations. We have to bring back our relationships and respect with all life. We must leave this place better than what it has become. On Friday we welcomed the @marineaffairs.dal students to visit the Pemsik Mawa'tasikl Anko'tmu'kl space at Summerville Centre. Here we wanted them to see, feel, smell & experience it's presence. We had the honour of visiting the New Brunswick Museum in St John last week, and was given a quick tour of the site after our presentation to the Passamaquoddy IPCA group who wanted to learn more about the Pemsik Mawa'tasikl Anko'tmu'kl vision and work.
